Liver Nurse News - May 2024

Welcoming CAHN’s new executive team and celebrating National Nursing Week!

Message from Lindsey Myles , CAHN’s new President

I am privileged to begin the term of president of a national organization that represents such a vibrant community of hepatology nurses. I would like to thank Lisa Douglas for her leadership and vision and for her continued mentorship with this new role!

This year marks the 25th anniversary of CAHN and looking forward to coming together to celebrate in November at CAHNference in Calgary, Alberta to mark this momentous occasion. I hope to see many of you there to share memories and milestones that have brought us to where we are today. I am excited to work with you in the upcoming term and continue to create a collective impact not only on those we care for living with liver diseases, but also our fellow health care colleagues and society.

Message from Lisa Douglas, CAHN’s Past President

It has been my great pleasure to serve as CAHN President. Together, we have continued to move the inspiring field of hepatology nursing forward!
This is an exciting time for hepatology nursing. We are seeing shifts in traditional hepatology nursing roles, the development of innovative models of nursing care, and a continued focus on connecting with clients from complex medical and social backgrounds. Hepatology nursing is grounded in the art of adaptation and I know going forward, CAHN will continue to forge a path that we can be proud to walk along.

2024 Annual General Meeting

Four board of directors were elected at CAHN’s Annual General Meeting which took place virtually on March 15. The new board met shortly after to appoint committee chairs who will be announced in the next newsletter. Working committees are now being assembled and some have already started planning. Thank you to everyone who put their name forward as a volunteer. It is through the passion and dedication of volunteers that CAHN is able to bring education to members!

Welcome CAHNs 2024 Executive Team!

2024 CLM Summary

This year’s CLM conference took place in beautiful Toronto, Ontario. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in content from CAHN, as well as the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver and the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. The meeting provided great networking opportunities within a diverse community to exchange knowledge, ultimately improving the quality of life among people affected by liver and GI-related diseases.

CAHN started the 2024 session on Saturday morning with Dr. Sunil Solomon, who presented an engaging and insightful update on the path towards HCV Elimination. The second session in CAHN’s program featured Dr. Hin Hin Ko presenting recent advances and new horizons in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, as well as Dr. Ian Patton who shared insights on Obesity, Stigma and the Patient Journey. Our afternoon session highlighted Equity in Hepatitis and HIV Care with presentations by CAHN member Mia Biondi and Dr. Kate Greenaway, covering topics including gender diversity, special populations and accessibility.

To cap off CAHN’s program, our highly anticipated annual debate for 2024 was between Dr. Sean Wharton and Dr. Giada Sebastiani – with the topic ‘Only Specialists Should Prescribe for Weight Management’. The debate was well attended, with compelling and informative arguments given from both sides.
