The CAHN Standards and Competencies were created to encapsulate the philosophy and principles underpinning hepatology nursing and describe the requirements for advancing the practice of the hepatology nurse. The standards and competencies were created in 2007. Since then, other resources have become available to hepatology nurses which has reduced the demand for these documents.

In November 2024, the executive team decided to archive the standards and competencies as they are no longer contemporary.
